Westside : $3 Million Helps Cure Hospital

St. John’s Medical Plaza is cured now, thanks in part to its ultrasound diagnostic tests.

The Santa Monica hospital is scheduled to reopen this week after it was vacated in April for round-the-clock earthquake repairs.

The repairs included strengthening the 8-year-old building’s steel frame. Ultrasound testing--also used to get pictures of fetuses--revealed that this baby’s frame had been weakened by as much as 90%, said J. Randall Moore, president of Morlin Management Corp., which manages the building. In one area, crews found a steel beam severed in two places by the 1994 Northridge earthquake, he said.

The building at 20th Street and Arizona Avenue is owned by a cooperative of St. John’s Hospital and Health Center doctors. The downside of this rebirth: estimated repair costs of $3 million--much more than anyone had expected.
