Six Seniors Awarded $1,000 Scholarships

Six $1,000 scholarships have been awarded to Orange County high school seniors by the Orange Empire Sertoma Club, a county philanthropic organization.

The scholarships were based on all-around high school activities and need. All of the students have a grade-point average of 3.7 or higher.

The winners are Natali Clarke, Saddleback High School; Lizehte Garcia, Foothill High School; Helen Kim, Santiago High School; Karin Nakamura, Santa Ana High School; Tuan Quoc Pham, Garden Grove High; and Ann Marie Ubl, Irvine High School. *

NORTH COUNTY

Health Foundation Scholarships Given

Eleven high school students were awarded a total of $10,000 in scholarships from the Friendly Hills HealthCare Foundation.

The winners are Megan Sweet, La Habra High School; Patricia Li, Sonora High; Julia Adams and Ha Pham, Buena Park High; Ann Marie Hatchel and Elizabeth Huang, Brea-Olinda High; Sean Curran, Whittier High; Erica Clark, Fullerton High, and Wendy Wong, Esperanza High.

Each winner has at least a 3.0 grade point average and will be attending a four-year college or university. The students were chosen based on a personal essay, participation in extracurricular activities, grades and financial need.

LA HABRA

Anthology to Include Poem by 9th-Grader

La Habra High School ninth-grader Michelle Clough has had one of her poems chosen for publication in the National High School Poetry Anthology.

Clough’s poem was among 1,500 that will be published. Judges chose the poems from 72,000 entries.

Irvine Teachers Give Scholarships

Eight high school seniors were awarded college scholarships ranging from $150 to $500 by the Irvine Teachers Assn.

Winners are Fernando Briones, Woodbridge High; Matthew Suhs, SELF High; Alisa Burton, El Toro High; Brendan Beirne, Woodbridge High; Jeff Goodell, Dana Hills High; Elizabeth Stevens, Woodbridge High; Christopher Pesavento, University High; and Angela Chou, Woodbridge High.

Students from outside Irvine Unified district qualified if a parent is a teacher in Irvine.

Sophomore Is Tops in Chemistry Exam

Paul Molowitch, a sophomore at Villa Park High School, was honored for attaining the highest score on the 1995 Orange County American Chemical Society Examination.
