COVER UP: While Hole has yet to write and record its follow-up to the acclaimed 1994 album “Live Through This,” an EP of previously unreleased material is due in September. Fans are sure to relish the five tracks on “Ask for It,” including one studio recording, a live performance and three songs from a session with BBC radio personality John Peel.

But it may be the set’s artwork that will draw the most attention.

The cover will feature a photo of a young person’s wrists with scars from a suicide attempt. Though the picture was selected by group leader Courtney Love in 1992 when the set was originally being planned for release by the independent Caroline Records, it now seems a painful reminder of last year’s suicide of Love’s husband, Kurt Cobain.

The folks at Caroline certainly thought so.

“We didn’t want to do it,” says Caroline spokeswoman Amy Welch. “But we sent the photo to [Hole’s] management and asked if this was a good idea, and they said, ‘Yes, it’s what [Love] wants.’ ”
