In a preliminary to the 30-lap Sprint Car Racing Assn. feature race, Tom Stansberry of Tehachapi celebrated his 19th birthday by running away with the 20-lap California Dwarf Car Racing Assn. event at Ventura Raceway.

Stansberry took the lead on the seventh lap, and was leading by nearly a half-lap over Rob Hansen of Simi Valley with three laps remaining when a caution flag came out.

The eight-lap heat races were won by Ed Johns, Rob Hansen, Steve Leffler and Stansberry.

Roger Teno earned his way into the feature with a victory in the 12-lap semi-main, while defending champion Johns took the five-lap Trophy Dash.

The outstanding performance of the night was registered by 18-year-old J.J. Yeley of Phoenix, who did a complete flip in the first lap of his eight-lap heat race, but restarted the car and outran the field to earn a spot in the 30-lap feature.

Ron DiDonato of Riverside, Cory Kruseman of Ventura and Gary Howard of Ventura were also victorious in the heat races, while Ron Shuman and Steve Ostling won the two 12-lap semi-mains.
