Valleywide : $55 Million Raised for Area Charities

A fund-raising campaign has generated more than $55 million for local nonprofit organizations in Los Angeles County, including dozens of agencies in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys.

The United Way of Greater Los Angeles ended its fund-raising efforts for the 1995-96 fiscal year Friday.

The United Way has allocated $44.9 million for area charities during its fiscal year. Individual charities are expected to receive at least 95% of the revenue they received during the prior fiscal year, according to United Way officials.

Funded programs include parenting skills classes, infant day-care training, counseling for battered women and children, services for AIDS patients, temporary housing and support services for families in high-risk communities.

Some of the organizations that receive United Way funds are the Boys & Girls Club, the Burbank Center for the Retarded, the Jewish Community Centers Assn., Project Angel Food, the Santa Clarita Child and Family Development Center, the Salvation Army and the YMCA.
