SIZE MATTERS
Allen E. Edwards’ movie-vs.-TV-screen-size hypothesis is geometrically sound but cognitively incorrect (Letters, July 2). People can see space--and the more they see, the better they feel. That’s why millions of people go to the Grand Canyon but not to the L.A. River.
It’s also why movies look better on big screens than they do in mall shoe boxes . . . and way better than sitting five feet from your 27-incher risking a tube tan from those harmful magnetic rays.

Edwards overlooks the fact that image resolution is of equal if not greater importance than screen size.
Thousands of lines of image information on film can be projected on screens 30 feet high or greater without suffering, resulting in a unique cinema experience that can never be duplicated by video, where even the highest-end monitors can only resolve about 450 lines of the inferior 525-line NTSC system.
