The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded grants totaling more than $3 million to three programs aimed at providing construction work for youth, loans to small businesses and technical assistance to community groups working to improve their neighborhoods.

The Youthbuild program, sponsored by the California Conservation Corps, received nearly $1 million, which will fund construction of 44 single-family homes and provide jobs for 30 local young people. The homes will, in turn, be sold to low-income families.

The Brotherhood Crusade community service agency received $1.7 million that will be loaned to area small businesses for expansion and revitalization efforts.

The Community Outreach Partnership Program, sponsored by UCLA, received $550,000--part of which will go toward helping community groups convert vacant lots into affordable housing.

Officials said the grants are part of HUD’s efforts to spark revitalization in economically depressed neighborhoods.
