The city is looking a little greener lately.

With the help of a $328,000 state grant, South Gate rejuvenated its walkways by planting nearly 3,000 trees in the last four months.

Contractors planted 2,000 trees in residential streets and 500 trees in commercial areas. In Hollydale Regional Park, 175 volunteers helped plant 350 trees, said Abdulla Ahmed, the city’s public works department project manager.

More than 20 varieties of trees-- magnolia, bottle brush, camphor and jacaranda--were used.
