WESTMINSTER : Protests Bring Delay of Proposed Rezoning

The City Council this week delayed voting on a proposed zoning change after receiving written and verbal protests from dozens of residents opposing it.

Developer Frank Jao is requesting a change to allow for some warehouse and storage facilities at a six-acre site along Bolsa Avenue. The property, at 9223-9225 Bolsa Ave., is undeveloped and borders a residential area.

Residents who live near the property said the change would allow noisy auto repair shops and objectionable adult businesses to locate there.

“In fairness to the surrounding property owners,” resident Richard Hendrix said, the proposed rezoning to light industrial use “is not the way to go.”

Mayor Charles V. Smith said he understood the residents’ concerns and asked city staff to prepare a more restrictive zoning proposal that would allow for small warehouses among the commercial development.

The council will vote on the final plan July 25.
