Although Pedro Martinez didn’t pitch a no-hitter, as his brother Ramon did Friday night, he had a solid performance for the Montreal Expos in an 8-2 victory over Philadelphia at Montreal.

Martinez (7-5) yielded six hits over eight innings, struck out six and walked three in his second victory in his last seven starts.

“I knew my fastball was strong from my first warmup pitch,” Martinez said. “There was no forcing it tonight. I was amazed by my curveball. I haven’t been using it the last three starts.”

Rondell White, hitless in his last 13 at-bats with only one hit in his last 20, went four for five with two runs batted in for the Expos.

It was White’s first multi-hit game since June 18, which was one week after he set a club record with six hits in an extra-inning game against the San Francisco Giants.

Atlanta 6, San Diego 2--Javier Lopez hit a three-run homer for the Braves and left-hander Tom Glavine threw eight strong innings at San Diego for his fourth consecutive victory.

Cincinnati 5, Chicago 4--Benito Santiago’s pinch-hit single off Randy Myers drove home the tie-breaking run with two outs in the ninth inning at Chicago.

Santiago, hitting .417 with nine RBIs in seven games since coming off the disabled list last week, was used to pinch hit for first baseman Hal Morris, and the catcher replaced Morris at first in the bottom of the ninth. He ended the game by scooping third baseman Jeff Branson’s throw out of the dirt.

Houston 13, San Francisco 8--Dave Magadan had a three-run double as the Astros scored six unearned runs with two outs in the fifth at San Francisco.

Jeff Bagwell had four hits and four RBIs for the Astros, including a three-run homer in the sixth. Craig Biggio homered in the first inning for the second straight day.

St. Louis 6, Pittsburgh 4--Ken Hill turned a rare early-inning lead into seven effective innings in 93-degree heat in Pittsburgh and the Cardinals stopped the Pirates’ four-game winning streak.

The Cardinals, who had scored only seven runs for Hill in his last eight starts, took a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

Hill (6-6) made the runs stand up to win for only the second time in eight decisions. He had lost five of last six since starting 4-0.

New York 11, Colorado 4--Todd Hundley had three singles in four at-bats, driving in three runs for the Mets at New York.

Ryan Thompson had a two-run homer and also drove in three runs. Rico Brogna contributed a two-run homer as the Mets, who batted around in the first inning.
