Spoiling the Grandkids With a Trip

The concept of intergenerational travel--grandparents taking the grandchildren on vacation--has been fine-tuned by a company called Grandtravel of Chevy Chase, Md.

Many of this summer’s tours are sold out, but in planning a trip with the grandkids next summer, there is a choice of eight domestic and nine international destinations. Itineraries are designed to appeal to both generations, with activities planned according to the age of the children. Before departure participants receive an itinerary, maps, city brochures, and an advisory on clothing, health, safety and tipping. Each tour is accompanied by a guide and group leader for cultural activities and games. Participants receive a photo album, a travel diary and a travel bag.

Tours include deluxe or first-class hotels, most meals, motor-coach transportation, admission fees, airport transfers, hotel taxes and tips.

A sampling of domestic tours may include activities, such as museums, national parks and monuments and rides in balloons, helicopters, jet boats and similar choices. Prices vary but range from $2,575 to $5,400 per person, double occupancy. Tour selections include:

* The Nation’s Capital: seven days, for all ages. Comprehensive touring includes Washington, Mt. Vernon, Williamsburg, Annapolis and Baltimore.

Domestic tours that range from eight to 10 days include:

* The American Indian Culture--Utah, Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico.

* The Grandest Canyons--Utah, Nevada and Arizona, including the Grand Canyon, Zion and Bryce national parks.

* Western Parks, Western Space--Wyoming and South Dakota.

A sampling of foreign tours include:

* Enchanting Ireland--Artisans, Legends, Poetry (13 days).

* Castles of England and Scotland (15 days).
