Hueneme High School students will be able to choose from more books, magazines and computer and laser disks when they return to school this fall, thanks to a $5,000 grant given to its library.
The high school campus in south Oxnard was one of 150 statewide that won the grant, state Department of Education officials said.
Hueneme competed with 2,500 other schools for the grant, said spokeswoman Susie Lange.
The money is donated to a school library fund by California taxpayers, Lange said.
Taxpayers can donate the money by checking off a box on their annual state income tax return, she said. The minimum donation was $1; statewide, taxpayers donated $275,000, Lange said.
Hueneme is one of five high school campuses in the Oxnard Union High School District. It is situated in an area that serves many poor students, officials noted.
No other school in Ventura County won a grant, Lange said.
