Central Los Angeles : Architect’s Idea for Center to Be Unveiled
Residents of Silver Lake know that if you want something done right, sometimes you just have to do it yourself.
Five years ago, the city said that a new recreation center for the park at Van Pelt Place and West Silver Lake Boulevard would probably be a 10,000-square-foot, nearly windowless brick behemoth.
In arty Silver Lake, the idea sank like, well, a 10,000-square-foot brick behemoth.
So, with the blessing of park officials, neighborhood architect Christian Dufay went to the drawing board on his own time and came up with a plan to match the needs identified in a community survey.
The result is a Spanish-style, red-tile-roofed building with exposed wooden beams that would be half the size of the building in the original plan. If the plan wins community approval, Recreation and Parks department officials will build it.
Dufay’s plan is scheduled for a public unveiling at 6:30 tonight at Friendship Hall Auditorium, 3201 Riverside Drive.
