LA HABRA : City Will Round Up Stray Shopping Carts
After more than a year of discussion, the city will begin collecting stray shopping carts that are littering the streets.
Under a new ordinance, the city will collect the carts and return them to supermarkets, which will be charged for the service.
Responding to pleas from the Southern California Grocers Assn., the City Council put off passing such an ordinance last year. The trade group said it was implementing a similar collection plan to bring the carts home, but at a lower cost to the supermarkets.
The council applauded the efforts of the group’s collection program but said the problem of stray shopping carts has persisted.
Police Chief Steven Staveley said there will soon be a toll-free number for people to call to report abandoned carts.
Mayor Juan M. Garcia said the city may take further action later.
“I wish there was something we could do about the people who take the carts,” he said. “They are the real culprits.”
