LAX Logs Record 26 Million Travelers in First 6 Months of Year

Nearly 26 million people traveled through Los Angeles International Airport during the first six months of 1995, a record passenger total for a six-month period, it was announced Wednesday.

International and domestic traffic jumped 8.8% to 25.7 million compared to the same period last year, said John J. Driscoll, executive director of the Los Angeles Department of Airports.

Domestic passengers reached 19.4 million, up 9.3%, while international travelers totaled 6.3 million, up 7.3%.

Air cargo increased 3.3% to 830,318 tons and aircraft movements (takeoffs and landings) rose 3.8% to 348,965, Driscoll said.

Ontario International Airport, also operated by the department, reported 3.09 million passengers for the six-month period, up 0.1%. Air cargo increased 5.4% to 189,499 tons and aircraft movements decreased 2.5% to 76,685.

Palmdale Regional Airport in the Antelope Valley reported 10,543 passengers, 2,100 pounds in air freight and 9,721 aircraft movements.

Van Nuys Airport, the department’s general aviation field in the San Fernando Valley, logged 235,760 takeoffs and landings--a 2.4% decrease.
