A group pushing to change the city’s name back to El Toro has a moved a step closer to its goal by turning over petitions seeking to put the proposal on the March ballot.

Representatives of the Restore El Toro campaign handed in petitions Tuesday bearing 3,030 signatures of registered voters, 250 more than required to qualify the initiative for the March 26 ballot.

The Orange County Registrar of Voters will now verify the signatures in a process that may take up to 30 days.

The name issue has divided residents ever since voters selected Lake Forest over El Toro by a 49% to 47% margin in the city’s 1991 incorporation election.

Petition organizers, who began their campaign in March, argue for tradition, pointing out that the name El Toro has been around more than 100 years while Lake Forest was coined by a developer fewer than 30 years ago.
