DANA POINT : Businesses Seek Signs to Guide Customers

Out-of-the-way hotels and businesses in the city would be allowed to rent private land to install directional signs under a proposal set to come before the Planning Commission on Wednesday.

The idea, which requires zoning law changes, would allow signs up to 24 feet square, no more than 1,000 feet from the business.

“This is not meant to be a way to advertise a business but instead a way to provide direction to businesses,” said Edward Knight, director of community development.

Businesses along La Plaza and San Juan Avenue, as well as the Blue/Green Lantern area, would be most eligible for the program, according to staff reports.

A handful of businesses far from main streets have asked the city for the signs because visitors have found it difficult to find them, Knight said.

The meeting is at 7 p.m. in council chambers, 33282 Street of the Golden Lantern, Room 210.
