FCC to Cut Employees by 10%: The move by the Federal Communications Commission would be the first time in its history it has laid off workers. Citing mounting congressional pressure to cut spending, FCC Chairman Reed Hundt said about 10% of the commission’s work force will be slashed over the next 12 months, closing the agency’s Atlanta, Boston and Seattle offices. Their functions will be absorbed by the offices in Chicago, Kansas City and San Francisco, he said. Hundt’s decision, which he said involves less than 200 jobs, does not require the approval of other commissioners. The House has voted to freeze the agency’s 1996 budget at $186 million; the Senate has not yet weighed in.
