Fast-Thinking Ferry Operator Puts Out Merry-Go-Round Fire
NEWPORT BEACH — Someone set fire to the carousel at the Balboa Fun Zone early Saturday morning, but the blaze was extinguished by a quick-thinking ferry operator who saw the smoke, police said.
“He docked the ferry, took a fire extinguisher out and put out a small fire,” said Sgt. Mike McDonough. “Someone had wrapped paper towels around the neck of the metal carousel horses and ignited it.”
No suspects were spotted and damage from the 2:30 a.m. blaze is estimated to be approximately $5,000, McDonough said.
The fire remains under investigation.
