Program to Teach Fish Hatchery Basics
Ventura County has received a $4,000 donation from the California Department of Fish and Game to establish a fish hatchery program in local schools.
The program, which will be called Trout in the Classroom, is a joint venture between the state agency and Sespe Flyfishers Inc., a nonprofit organization that promotes ecology.
The purpose of the program will be to teach students about trout and the importance of properly managing streams and rivers, officials said.
Most of the grant money will be used to purchase aquariums and to train volunteers to help with the six-week classroom sessions. During the program, students will study the development of fish from eggs to a more mature state.
The students will also participate in releasing the fish into a stream or river designated by the Department of Fish and Game. The agency will be responsible for providing fish eggs and an education coordinator for the program.
