Airport Warning in Philippines

Passengers flying in or out of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila, Philippines, must be warned that the airport’s security measures do not meet international standards, according to a new Department of Transportation requirement. The U.S. government is working with Philippine officials to correct the deficiencies, and the airport’s security measures will be re-evaluated in six months, the DOT said. In the meantime, U.S. and foreign carriers that fly direct to the United States from the Philippines are providing additional security to compensate.

In other airline safety news, the Federal Aviation Administration has added Haiti to its list of countries that do not meet the international safety standards for aircraft set by the International Civil Aviation Organization. The FAA periodically assesses foreign countries’ ability to oversee safety of their air carriers that operate in the U. S., and its rating of Haiti as “unacceptable” means its carriers are no longer permitted to operate flights to or from the United States.
