Southeast : $1.75 Million May Repair Condo Owners’ Peace of Mind
A check for $1.75 million may repair the peace of mind of a group of Downey senior citizens who filed suit in 1993, claiming faulty construction of their condominiums.
A Costa Mesa construction firm has agreed to pay the sum to the Regent Terrace Homeowners Assn. of Downey for repairs to a three-story, 127-unit complex on Dolan Avenue. The condos have been plagued with problems since the complex opened in 1988, an attorney for the group said.
The association plans to use the money to fix roof leaks and as reimbursement for structural repairs already made. A $1-million claim still stands against the building’s original plumber.
An attorney for Zellner Communities, the contractor named in the suit, said the amount of the settlement indicates that the building’s faults were maintenance-related, not structural, because such repairs cost tens of millions of dollars.
