NEWPORT BEACH : Fire Causes $380,000 Damage to S&L; Branch
An electrical malfunction sparked a fire that caused $380,000 in damage, mostly to computer equipment, at Downey Savings and Loan Assn. on Jamboree Road, fire officials said Thursday.
About midnight Wednesday, employees on the second floor of the bank saw smoke from a computer area and evacuated about seven people before calling 911, investigators said.
Firefighters found thick smoke billowing from a computerized check sorting machine and other computers, Battalion Chief Scott Allan said.
Thirty-eight firefighters worked about an hour to control the fire, which was partly contained by a sprinkler system, Allan said.
No one was injured.
