Lohr Leads Magee by One Shot in Canada

Bob Lohr, seeking his first PGA Tour victory in seven years, shot a five-under-par 67 Friday for a two-round total of 135 and a one-stroke lead over Andrew Magee in the Bell Canadian Open at Oakville.

Magee, whose last victory came at the 1994 Northern Telecom Open, shot 68 over chilly, wind-swept Glen Abbey Golf Course. Jim Gallagher Jr., a two-time winner this year, shot 68 and was at 137.

First-round leader Russ Cochran followed his 66 with an 80.

Sixtysomethings Don January, Jimmy Powell and Joe Jimenez shot five-under-par 67s to share the first-round lead in the GTE Northwest Classic at Kenmore, Wash.

The trio of players 60 and over finished one stroke in front of Mike Still, Walter Morgan, Bob Zimmerman and Bob Smith.

Alison Nicholas had a six-under-par 66 to take a two-shot lead after the first round of the LPGA Ping-AT&T; Wireless Services Championship at Portland, Ore.

At 68 were LPGA veterans Amy Alcott and Rosie Jones, Italian newcomer Stefania Croce and Peruvian-born Jenny Lidback, who won the duMaurier two weeks ago.

Nebraska football player Riley Washington was ordered to stand trial on a charge of attempted second-degree murder.

Lancaster County Judge James Foster said testimony by three witnesses was sufficient to show probable cause that Washington was involved in the shooting of Jermaine Cole on Aug. 2 outside a Lincoln convenience store. He set arraignment for Washington on Sept. 13.

Marquis Williams, an all-Big West Conference player after rushing for 1,060 yards in his freshman year, was kicked off the Arkansas State team after his arrest in connection with a drive-by shooting.

Williams is accused of firing a gun at a house after someone threw a beer can at his car, police said. He is accused of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm on state property, both felonies.

Dale Earnhardt, the third driver to hit the track in qualifying for the Miller 400, set a pace the 41 drivers behind him couldn’t match and won the pole at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway. Earnhardt averaged 122.543 m.p.h. on his second trip around the D-shaped circuit, 0.088 seconds faster than Winston Cup points leader Jeff Gordon. . . . Teo Fabi of Italy had a lap of 113.012 m.p.h. to win the provisional pole for the IndyCar PPG Cup’s season-ending Bank of America 300 in Monterey on Sunday. . . . David Coulthard won the provisional pole for Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

Hockey

Chad Kilger, the fourth pick overall at the NHL draft in June, will report to training camp with the Mighty Ducks on Sunday even though he hasn’t signed a contract, agent Larry Kelly told General Manager Jack Ferreira.

Brent Gretzky, the younger brother of Wayne Gretzky, signed a contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs. . . . The St. Louis Blues named Roger Neilson an associate coach. The Florida Panthers fired Neilson, 61, in June. . . . The Boston Bruins signed 38-year-old free-agent forward Joe Mullen to a one-year contract.

Journeyman Willy Salazar upset previously undefeated International Boxing Federation flyweight champion Danny Romero, stopping him after seven rounds of a non-title fight in Las Vegas. . . . Stressing he was responsible for the commercial and sporting success of international soccer, FIFA head Joao Havelange staved off a renewed challenge from the powerful European confederation in Zurich, Switzerland. . . . The United States won its first gold medal of the Diving World Cup in Atlanta when Brian Earley and Kevin McMahon won the men’s synchronized three-meter springboard.
