Chip Maker Hires Ex-IBM Boss: National Semiconductor Corp. has named Ellen M. Hancock, a former executive at IBM Corp., as executive vice president and chief operating officer. She will become one of four people who form the office of the president at the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company, one of the nation’s largest makers of computer chips. Hancock will report to Gilbert F. Amelio, National’s chairman, president and chief executive, the company said. Richard M. Beyer and Kirk P. Pond are also chief operating officers in the company. Hancock has been a technology industry consultant since leaving IBM in January after 29 years. Her last position was senior vice president and group executive overseeing networking products.
