PREP ROUNDUP : Wilkins, Metzger Help San Clemente Upset No. 2 Laguna Beach

San Clemente, ranked eighth in Orange County, upset second-ranked Laguna Beach, 13-15, 15-13, 21-19, 17-15, in a nonleague girls’ volleyball match Tuesday at San Clemente High.

Wendy Wilkins and Kate Metzger each had 24 kills for San Clemente (1-1), which gained the momentum with a victory in Game 3 after Laguna Beach fought off five game points. Paige Spaulding added 14 kills for the Tritons.

Michelle Christ had a match-high 30 kills for Laguna Beach (0-1), ranked third in the Southern Section Division I poll.

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

Brea Olinda 3, El Dorado 0--Kelly Kleinsmith, who had eight aces, served all 15 points in Game 1 for Brea Olinda, which won, 15-0, 15-5, 15-9.

Capistrano Valley 3, Irvine 1--Kristin Smith had 22 kills and Suzanne Shaw added 20 for fifth-ranked Capistrano Valley (2-0), which won, 15-8, 13-15, 15-13, 15-10.

El Toro 3, Marina 1--Lydia Day had 12 kills, seven blocks and six aces in the 15-17, 15-6, 15-3, 15-2 victory for ninth-ranked El Toro (2-0).

Fullerton 3, Loara 2--Shannon Hoerner had 10 kills for Fullerton (1-0), which won, 16-14, 15-10, 9-15, 5-15, 15-12.

La Habra 3, Esperanza 1--Barbi Wiborg had 28 kills and 10 blocks for 10th-ranked La Habra (1-0), which beat Esperanza, ranked seventh in the county, 15-10, 13-15, 15-10, 15-8.

Orange 3, Laguna Hills 1--Wendy Ames had 13 kills in Orange’s 14-16, 15-6, 15-5, 15-3 victory.

Orange Lutheran 3, Villa Park 1--Cassie Werhas had 14 kills for Orange Lutheran (3-0), which won, 15-8, 15-13, 12-15, 15-5.

Santa Margarita 3, Dana Hills 2--Michelle Chambers had 21 kills for Santa Margarita (1-0), which won, 15-7, 15-7, 5-15, 7-15, 15-12. Jamie Bari had 22 kills for Dana Hills (0-2).

Western 3, La Puente Bishop Amat 0--Celeste Manliguis had 15 kills for Western, which won, 15-1, 15-6, 15-5.

In Sunset League field hockey:

Santiago 13, Westminster 0--Camelia Rodriguez scored six goals for host Santiago (2-0).

Marina 1, Huntington Beach 0--Denis Klymshyn scored the winning goal in the first half and Stacey Carman had 16 saves for Marina (2-0).

In nonleague girls’ tennis:

Corona del Mar 15, Los Alamitos 3--Nina Vaughan, Megan Wachtler and Alissa Scott swept the nine singles sets for host Corona del Mar (2-0), ranked No. 1 in Orange County.

Edison 13, Long Beach Wilson 5--Kelly Foster and Nichole Kojima each lost only two games, sweeping their singles sets for visiting Edison (1-1), ranked seventh in the county.

El Dorado 13, El Modena 5--Susan Surapruik and Brittany McMillan swept their doubles sets 6-1, 6-1, 6-2, for ninth-ranked El Dorado (3-0).

Fountain Valley 16, La Quinta 2--Jennifer Hipp swept in singles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, for host Fountain Valley (1-0).

Garden Grove 10 2/3, Ocean View 10 1/3--Garden Grove’s Hong Le and Thi Ngo swept in doubles, 6-0, 6-1, 6-2. Garden Grove trailed, 8-1, after singles.

Laguna Beach 16, San Clemente 2--Sarah Cohen swept in singles, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0, for visiting Laguna Beach (2-1), top-ranked in Division II.

Rosary 12, Sunny Hills 6--Michelle Hamilton and Cheryl Hamilton swept in doubles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for visiting Rosary (3-0).

University 10, Capistrano Valley 8--Jill Krupoff and Ryoko Takano swept in doubles, 7-6, 6-4, 6-1, for host University (1-1), ranked 10th in the county.

In nonleague water polo:

Long Beach Wilson 11, Newport Harbor 10 (OT)--Adam Wright scored four goals for Wilson (1-0), which outscored Newport Harbor, 2-1, in overtime. Wilson is ranked fifth in Division I.

Mike Peetz scored five goals and Chris Seib had three for the visiting Sailors (0-1), who are ranked third in Orange County and seventh in Division I.

Foothill 17, San Clemente 10--Jeff Pflueger and Kevin Brantley each scored five goals for Foothill (1-0), ranked No. 1 in Orange County and Division I. Colin Shaughnessy had five goals for host San Clemente, ranked sixth in the county.

Costa Mesa 18, Trabuco Hills 5--James Comfort scored six goals and teammate Roger Kirnof added four goals for Costa Mesa (1-0), ranked second in the county.

Downey Warren 27, Garden Grove 11--Brandon Osborne scored six goals for Garden Grove (0-1).

Estancia 22, Valencia 7--Eric Wayman scored seven goals and Joe Huang added five for Estancia (1-0).
