A 10-year Los Angeles police detective charged with offering to prevent prosecution of a domestic abuse case for $3,000 also is the subject of a homicide investigation, authorities said Thursday.

In the latest of a list of embarrassments for the Los Angeles Police Department, Detective William Jang, 32, appeared Thursday in Los Angeles Municipal Court for his arraignment on one felony count of bribery.

When a request was made to reduce Jang’s $250,000 bail, Deputy Dist. Atty. Richard Goul disclosed that the detective is being targeted in the probe of the death of a 41-year-old woman.

Kyong Sue Kim’s body was found in the Angeles National Forest on May 13 by a hiker, said Deputy Mark Bailey of the county Sheriff’s Department. She had been struck in the face with a shotgun blast. She was last seen in Koreatown the evening of May 12, authorities said.

Investigators did not say how or when Jang came to be a suspect in the woman’s murder.

Jang’s arraignment on the bribery charge was postponed until Tuesday. The charge against the detective, stationed at the Southeast Station, stems from an alleged visit he made Sept. 12 to a man held at the Wilshire Station. The detective allegedly told the domestic abuse suspect not to worry about the arrest--that he would take care of everything in exchange for the cash, authorities said.
