Home Businesses

I am in full support of City Council member Laura Chick’s effort to legalize home-based businesses in Los Angeles (Commentary, Sept. 6). I am one of those illegal home-based businesses and have been since 1988. I find it very interesting that I can get a city business licensee and pay my city business taxes and yet operate in what is actually an illegal manner.

Home-based business are the wave of the future and for L.A. to continue to keep them illegal is shortsighted in the extreme. This is just one more example of how unbusiness friendly L.A. really is.

I testified at the committee hearing when this issue was last heard. Councilman Hal Bernson sent the issue back to staff to develop enforcement ideas. He did so without a time limit. I believe this was intended to kill the proposal by getting it lost in the limbo of the bureaucracy.

It is time to bring the issue back to the table and before the council so the city can enter the 20th Century on this issue.
