PREP ROUNDUP : No. 1 Corona del Mar Rolls Past Laguna Beach
With strong play from its players, top-ranked Corona del Mar had no trouble with sixth-ranked Laguna Beach, winning, 12-6, in nonleague girls’ tennis Wednesday at Corona del Mar.
Though Laguna Beach was without one of its top players in Lindsay Weiss, who was on a recruiting trip to Northwestern University, Corona del Mar performed well with excellent play from sophomore Nina Vaughan and seniors Megan Wachtler and Alissa Scott.
In No. 1 singles, two of the county’s best players battled it out with Michelle Bray of Laguna Beach beating Vaughan, 6-4, in the first set.
In doubles, Corona del Mar (5-0) and Laguna Beach (2-3) played it tight with the Artists winning five of the nine matches.
In other nonleague girls’ tennis:
Los Amigos 11, Saddleback 7--Seng Luu of Los Amigos was the only player who swept her sets during the match, winning 6-3, 6-1, 6-2. Los Amigos improves to 4-1.
Savanna 12, Bellflower 6--The visiting Rebels (3-3) swept nine singles sets, but Grace Kim and Thuan Pham won two of three sets in doubles to clinch the victory.
Troy 13, Western 5--Dana Kim overcame an 0-3 deficit and won, 7-5, in her opening set against Debbie Jethva, and Irene Noguchi swept her sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-3, for the Warriors (4-0).
Villa Park 11, Los Alamitos 7--Villa Park’s Katey Becker lost to Melissa Rosenthal in the preseason and the playoffs last season, but got some revenge with a 6-4 victory in Wednesday’s rematch.
Faye DeVera paced the fifth-ranked Spartans (5-0) with a 6-1, 6-0, 6-0 sweep.
Sonia and Monica Ralli swept their doubles sets, 6-2, 7-6, 6-3, for Los Alamitos, ranked third in Division II.
Woodbridge 18, Foothill 0--The Warriors lost only 13 games in the match and freshmen Michelle Stiefel and Danielle Hustedt swept in doubles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0.
Stiefel and Hustedt have won 17 of 18 sets this season for Woodbridge (6-0), which is ranked second in the county and third in Division II.
In nonleague boys’ cross-country:
Valencia 25, Norwalk Glenn 30--Senior Carlos Rojas, the defending Orange League champion, took first place in a time of 16 minutes 50 seconds on Tri-City Park’s three-mile course for Valencia (1-0). Richie Parsons was second (17:18) and Victor Vega fifth (17:57) for the Tigers.
San Clemente 23, Aliso Niguel 32--Greg Harlan and his twin brother, Scott, finished the 3.1-mile race in 17:45 at Aliso Niguel High for visiting San Clemente.
In nonleague girls’ cross-country:
Aliso Niguel 26, San Clemente 29--Andrea Rosien (22:34) and Nicole Trott (22:45) finished first and second to lead host Aliso Niguel on the 3.1 mile-course.
In nonleague girls’ volleyball:
Connelly 3, Huntington Beach Claremont 0--Marissa Pollara had nine kills and five aces for visiting Claremont (6-0), which won, 15-3, 15-3, 15-2.
Costa Mesa 3, Saddleback 0--The Mustangs served 17 aces in the 15-9, 16-14, 15-4 victory, including five straight to win the second game.
Sophomore Taline Seikeldjian had five aces and Julie Collett and Alicia Harber had six kills each for Costa Mesa (1-1).
El Modena 3, Loara 0--Meghan Coolbaugh had eight kills, six aces and three blocks for host El Modena (4-0), which won, 15-11, 15-9, 15-2.
Pacifica 3, Rancho Alamitos 0--Tracy Burns had nine kills and two aces and setter Ginny Simpson had five aces and 19 assists for Pacifica (2-2, 2-0), which won, 15-7, 15-7, 15-10, at Rancho Alamitos.
Santa Ana Valley 3, Savanna 1--Rhonda Bell had 11 kills and Claudia Ramirez had nine aces for host Santa Ana Valley (2-1), which won, 15-7, 11-15, 15-9, 15-6.
Villa Park 3, Fullerton 0--Andrea Reid and Mary Jo Pennington each had seven kills for host Villa Park (2-1), which won, 15-3, 15-2, 15-8.
In nonleague water polo:
Huntington Beach 23, Santa Ana 5--Dustin Worley scored four goals and Jimmy Newton, Ryan Curran, Todd Moberly and Tony Driessen had three each for Huntington Beach (4-6), which led, 10-1, after the first quarter.
Santa Margarita 10, Canyon 8--Trevor Walsh scored two of his four goals in the fourth quarter and goalie Steve Ferguson had 19 saves for visiting Santa Margarita (5-2). Brad Schaeffer scored five goals for Canyon (3-4), which tied the score, 5-5, midway through the third quarter before Santa Margarita pulled away.
