School evaluators are coming to Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach and school officials couldn’t be happier.

This is the first time the school has become a finalist in the U.S. Department of Education’s national Blue Ribbon School contest. The department’s representatives will arrive at the campus next month to evaluate the school.

For three days, they will meet with the high school staff, students, parents and family members. The annual award, which is presented at elementary, intermediate and high school levels, is based on curriculum, community support and technological advances.

“It’s the highest level of achievement a high school can get,” said Mira Costa Principal John Giovati. “Being nominated gives us validation for all the programs that we have here.”

According to district Supt. Jerry Davis, Mira Costa High became a finalist because of its modern technology, academic excellence and community support. The school has four computer labs complete with Internet access and CD ROM. El Monte High School is the only other high school in Southern California to be a finalist for the national award.
