HUNTINGTON BEACH : City, Firm Team Up on Beach Maintenance
A new partner will help the city keep the beach clean in the coming months, making up for budget cutbacks in winter maintenance programs along the sands.
The City Council this week approved a partnership with Sunshine Makers Inc., a Huntington Beach company that produces and distributes the biodegradable cleaning product Simple Green. Together, the city and company will sponsor an “adopt-a-beach” program from November to March, 1996.
Under the program, the beach will be divided into 17 sections to be adopted by nonprofit groups, Community Services Director Ron Hagan said.
If these groups keep their area clean during the five months of the program, Simple Green will give each group $500--a total donation of $8,500--in exchange for their volunteer work.
In addition, the company will be able to advertise itself on 17 lifeguard towers as the official “Surf City Adopt-A-Beach” partner.
Hagan said the program will save the city more than $40,000 in labor costs and supplies.
Nonprofit groups interested in joining the program can call (714) 536-5287 for an application form or for more information. The applications must be filed by Oct. 13 at beach headquarters, 103 Pacific Coast Highway.
