COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Garrison Paces Chapman at the Biola Invitational
Danielle Garrison finished 35th, running the 5,000-meter cross-country course at La Mirada Regional Park in a season-best 21 minutes 4 seconds to lead the Chapman women’s team at the Biola Invitational Saturday.
Chapman finished second in the NCAA Division III and NAIA race with 58 points. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps won with 15. Claremont also won the overall competition, which included Division I schools.
Cal State Fullerton was fourth in the overall competition, Chapman was eighth.
Pilar Gordillo (37th, 21:29), Tara McGranahan (38th, 21:30), Tracy Burrows (54th, 22:06), and Maureen Fox (56th, 22:10) were Chapman’s other runners earning points.
At the UC San Diego Cross-Country Invitational:
UC Irvine runner places sixth--Shawn Frack of UC Irvine was the top local men’s finisher, placing sixth with a time of 27 minutes 2.84 seconds on the 8,000-meter course. German Echevarria was eighth in 27:09.63 for the Anteaters. Goss Lindsey of UC San Diego won in 25:45.66.
Occidental won the men’s competition with 34 points; UCI finished second with 50.
For the women, UCI’s Jamie Vaicaro finished the 5,000-meter course in 19:45.29 to place fifth. Kelly Hughes was eighth (20:11.60) and Magi Martinez ninth (20:18.58) for UCI. Natalie Austin of Occidental won in 19:21.18.
Occidental won the women’s team competition with 37 points. UCI finished third with 76.
In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s soccer:
Southern California College 7, Biola 0--Lori Van Herk scored three goals to lead the Vanguards past winless Biola. Joelle Ross had two goals for the SCC (9-4, 3-1).
In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:
Pacific 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--The Titans lost their seventh conference match of the season, 15-8, 15-4, 15-10. Heather Bassett led Fullerton with nine kills.
The Titans are 5-12, 0-7 in the conference.
In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s volleyball:
Concordia 3, Southern California College 0--Amy Bonacorsi and Jeni Hoffman each had 12 kills for Concordia, which gained its first conference victory, 15-12, 15-2, 15-12. Angela Tonavanik had 10 kills for SCC (5-11, 1-6).
In nonconference volleyball:
UC Irvine 3, William & Mary 0--Popi Edwards had 15 kills and Meredith Fletcher had 33 assists to lead UC Irvine (4-10), 15-10, 15-7, 15-12. Anastasi Paveloff had 12 kills for the Anteaters.
Julie Amberg had 12 kills and Anne Ashcraft had 27 assists for William & Mary (5-8).
In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo:
UCLA 6, Long Beach State 2--Tim Ault and Jeff Rose had goals for the 49ers (5-7, 0-3), ranked No. 7 nationally, but Long Beach State couldn’t get past No. 6 UCLA (9-4, 5-0).
Adam Lee had six saves for Long Beach State.
In nonconference water polo:
Claremont-Mudd 16, Chapman 4--Andy Gaw and Juan Felsmann each scored a goal, but Chapman was overmatched. Earlier, Chapman lost to Pomona-Pitzer, 10-5. Felsmann scored twice and Gaw had five saves for the Panthers (5-10).
