Suspected Robber Kills Self After High-Speed Police Chase
A suspect in a jewelry store robbery fatally shot himself in the head Monday when he was cornered by an officer after leading police on a high-speed chase through Chinatown, authorities said.
The suspect, who was not immediately identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.
About noon Monday, two patrol officers spotted a vehicle speeding and running red lights. The officers followed the vehicle and after a short pursuit a suspect jumped out of the car and fled, clutching a black bag filled with stolen jewelry, police said. The two officers followed on foot.
The suspect turned toward one officer and pointed his gun, police said. They said the officer fired three rounds, but missed. The suspect took off running and aimed again at the officer, police said. The officer fired another round, again missing the suspect. At that time, the Cambodian-born suspect placed his gun to his head and fired a single round.
