Chaminade Triumphs
WEST HILLS — Playing without the region’s leading scorer in the second half, Chaminade High still managed a 21-9 victory over St. Bernard in a Mission League opener Friday at Chaminade.
Jason Giovannettone, the region’s leading scorer with 15 touchdowns entering the game, suffered an injured left ankle on the opening kickoff of the second half.
He was carried off the field and did not return. He finished with 66 yards in 10 carries and scored on a 14-yard screen pass from Jason Zdenek.
Chaminade’s Scot Davis picked up where Giovannettone left off, rushing for 82 yards in 14 carries, including an 11-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter for a 21-3 lead.
Zdenek’s scoring pass to Gabe Crecion in the third quarter gave Chaminade (6-0) a 14-3 lead.
St. Bernard (2-4) managed only 39 yards in the second half.
