ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL / PREP EXTRA : Pacifica Defense Shuts Down Garden Grove
GARDEN GROVE — Chase Hamm returned the opening kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown and Verdell Le Veaux added two first-half touchdowns to help Pacifica to a 34-0 victory over host Garden Grove in a Garden Grove League game Friday night.
Le Veaux scored on runs of six and five yards in the second quarter, giving Pacifica a 21-0 halftime lead.
Le Veaux’s first score was set up when linebacker Wes Choate sacked Argonaut quarterback Troy Haller at the Pacifica 44-yard line on fourth down. Eight plays later, Le Veaux scored, giving the Mariners a 14-0 lead with six minutes 40 seconds remaining in the first half.
Choate and teammate Jason Basham forced Haller to throw an incomplete pass on a fourth down play at midfield, setting up Le Veaux’s second score, with 53 seconds left in the first half.
The Mariners (4-1-1, 2-0-1) drove 88 yards on their first possession of the second half, capping the five-minute march with a 27-yard scoring pass from quarterback J.D. Stern to wide receiver Paul Tessier.
Pacifica finished its scoring on a three-yard run by Russell Morfin after Craig Chow intercepted a Haller Pass and returned it to the Argonaut 22.
Pacifica gained 288 yards in total offense and allowed Garden Grove (1-5, 1-2) to cross midfield just once in the second half.
