COLLEGE FOOTBALL : WESTERN ATHLETIC ROUNDUP : Jones Gains 270 Yards to Lead San Diego State

George Jones rushed for 270 yards and five touchdowns, both career bests, to lead San Diego State to a 48-24 Western Athletic Conference victory over Fresno State on Saturday night at San Diego.

Jones, a junior who carried 28 times, rushed for the fifth-highest total in San Diego State history. Marshall Faulk, now of the Indianapolis Colts, has the top three rushing games.

Jones scored from 70, seven, give, one and five yards as the Aztecs, 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the WAC, beat Fresno State for the first time in four games since the Bulldogs entered the WAC in 1992.

Jones, who rushed 16 times for 195 yards and three touchdowns in the first half, concluded the second half’s first possession with a one-yard touchdown run.

Quarterback Richie Donati completed 21 of 38 passes for 360 yards and two touchdowns and was intercepted twice for Fresno State (4-3, 1-2).

San Diego State’s Billy Blanton was 21 for 31 for 355 yards and one touchdown with one interception.

Colorado State 19, Utah 14--Four years of frustration came to an end and the Rams were happy to have it happen in Salt Lake City’s Rice Stadium.

With Matt McDougal kicking four field goals, the Rams ended a skid against the Utes that included a 45-31 loss last year in Fort Collins.

“It was an overall team victory, and an especially nice game for our seniors. I heard them say after the game, ‘We finally won in Big Red,’ ” an elated Colorado State Coach Sonny Lubick said.

Utah slipped to 3-4, 3-2.

McDougal accounted for 13 of the Rams’ points, including his PAT on the Rams’ sole touchdown, and running back E.J. Watson racked up 162 yards rushing.

Steve Standifer ensured the victory for Colorado State (4-2, 2-1) when he recovered Henry Lusk’s fumble of a punt return at the Utah 13-yard line with 1:22 remaining.

New Mexico 24, Hawaii 10--Quarterback Donald Sellers ran for two touchdowns and an early fourth-down gamble helped the Lobos (3-3, 1-3) beat the Rainbows (2-3, 1-2) in a WAC game at Albuquerque.

Sellers scored on runs of five and six yards in the first half, with the second scoring drive kept alive when New Mexico converted on fourth and inches at its 36 with 5:09 left in the first half.

Wyoming 27, Louisville 20--The Cowboys (3-2) struggled throughout their nonconference game against the Cardinals (3-4) a Laramie, Wyo.

The game was marred by penalties on both sides, as Wyoming gave up 125 yards on 15 penalties and the Cardinals were hit with nine penalties for 84 yards.

Wyoming quarterback John Wallwork, one of the nation’s leading passers, turned to the rushing game midway through the final quarter when his air attack was stymied by Louisville’s defense.

With the help of running back Jermaine McDowell, Wallwork threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to David Saraf to break a 20-20 tie and give Wyoming the victory.

Tulsa 38, Texas El Paso 28--Quarterback Troy DeGar ran for two fourth-quarter touchdowns and James Dearth returned a blocked punt for a late score for the Golden Hurricane (4-3) in a nonconference game at El Paso, Tex. The Miners fell to 1-6.
