PREP ROUNDUP : Villa Park Beats No. 1 Wilson in Water Polo
Villa Park, ranked third in the Southern Section Division I poll, rallied from five goals down to upset top-ranked Long Beach Wilson, 11-10, Monday in a nonleague water polo game at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.
Junior Joey Pacelli scored with 2 minutes 55 seconds left to give Villa Park (18-2) a 10-9 lead. Joey’s freshman brother Nicholas put the Spartans ahead, 11-9, with 1:14 left. Long Beach Wilson (15-3) scored with 44 seconds left.
Villa Park ran out the 35-second shot clock and Wilson’s final shot, from mid-pool was stopped by goalkeeper Jon Pharris (11 saves) as time ran out. Brian Pharris had five goals.
Long Beach Wilson led, 5-2, after one quarter and scored the first two goals of the second quarter for a 7-2 lead.
In nonleague girls’ tennis:
Laguna Beach 9, Dana Hills 9, (Laguna Beach wins on games, 76-75)--Michelle Bray and Lindsay Weiss swept in singles as Laguna Beach, ranked fifth in Orange County, upset No. 3 Dana Hills.
Bray won, 6-3, 6-3, 6-0, and Weiss won, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2.
Rosary 16, Glendora St. Lucy’s 2--Eleanor Luzano won, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for Rosary, which is ranked sixth in Southern Section Division III.
