PREP ROUNDUP : Singles Spark Corona del Mar Past Woodbridge
Second-ranked Corona del Mar won eight of nine singles sets, including sweeps by Nina Vaughan and Megan Wachtler, and defeated top-ranked Woodbridge, 11-7, in a Sea View League girls’ tennis match Tuesday at Woodbridge High.
Vaughan and Wachtler lost close tiebreakers to Natalie Exon when Woodbridge (11-1, 5-1) beat the Sea Kings, 10-8, earlier in the season. However, Vaughan won a tiebreaker and Wachtler followed with a 7-5 victory in their rematches with Exon.
Alissa Scott won two of three singles sets and Kate Julian and Marisol Ferea won two of three in doubles for Corona del Mar (10-2, 5-1).
In the Sea View League:
Newport Harbor 12, El Toro 6--Erica Nelson lost only one game in singles, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, for sixth-ranked Newport Harbor (12-4, 4-2).
In the South Coast League:
Dana Hills 17, Capistrano Valley 1--Shayna Rimel and Karlie Noyes swept in doubles, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3, for No. 3 Dana Hills (10-5, 5-0). Amy Tranckino and Brook Calton also won, 6-3, 6-2, 6-0.
In Freeway League volleyball:
Sonora 3, Fullerton 0--Missy Gomez served 15 consecutive points in the third game of host Sonora’s 15-5, 15-2, 15-0 victory.
In the Sea View League:
Newport Harbor 3, El Toro 1--Melissa Snow had 18 kills and Jeannette Hecker seven kills and 35 assists for fifth-ranked Newport Harbor (6-4, 5-0), which won, 15-9, 17-15, 11-15, 15-5.
Santa Margarita 3, Irvine 1--Sarah Steenblock had five aces for No. 6 Santa Margarita (10-1, 4-1), which won, 15-6, 15-13, 14-16, 15-5.
In the South Coast League:
San Clemente 3, Trabuco Hills 0--Paige Spaulding had 10 kills and four aces for No. 2 San Clemente (10-1, 5-0), which beat Trabuco Hills (3-7, 1-4). Whitney Uhl had 11 kills for Trabuco Hills.
In the Sunset League:
Huntington Beach 3, Fountain Valley 0--Melissa Wendt had 26 kills and Allison Ciarelli 79 assists for top-ranked Huntington Beach (12-0, 5-0), which won, 10-15, 15-4, 15-11, 14-16, 15-2.
Edison 3, Esperanza 0--Jennifer Ammann and Shauna Steward had 10 kills each and Dana Clemens had 40 assists for No. 9 Edison (8-3, 3-2), which beat No. 10 Esperanza (3-2 in league), 15-12, 15-5, 15-8.
In nonleague water polo:
San Clemente 7, Servite 6--Jim Farley’s goal with 1:39 left broke a 6-6 tie and gave third-ranked San Clemente the victory over No. 7 Servite. Farley scored twice for the Tritons (10-5) and David Cramp had two goals for the Friars (12-7).
Capistrano Valley 12, Irvine 9--Don Yang scored six goals for No. 8 Capistrano Valley (10-11, 1-1), and Ryan Wall added five.
In Sunset League field hockey:
Santiago 2, La Verne Bonita 0--Camelia Rodriguez and Veronica Velazquez scored for Santiago (11-1).
