Nebraska running back Lawrence Phillips, who was indefinitely suspended after hitting an ex-girlfriend, broke his silence about the trouble he has faced.

In a telephone call to an Omaha radio talk show, Phillips said he could have just left the university and turned to pro football after his Sept. 10 arrest and no-contest plea to an assault charge. He said agents called him.

“I could have just left,” he said. “I didn’t do that I stayed here. I’m going to school. I’m going to do what’s right.”

Phillips is awaiting sentencing Dec. 1 on the misdemeanor charge. Coach Tom Osborne said Tuesday that the junior could return to practice next week but won’t play for at least the next two weeks.

Colorado starting tackle Clint Moore failed to report to practice again Wednesday, and coaches and teammates said they were concerned. Coach Rick Neuheisel learned from Moore’s father that the senior captain is dealing with insomnia and personal stress.
