Dominik Hasek made 20 saves, and Derek Plante and Jason Dawe each scored for the first time this season Wednesday night at Buffalo as the Sabres beat the Edmonton Oilers, 4-1.

The Oilers, who defeated the Stanley Cup champion New Jersey Devils a night earlier for their first victory of the season, scored only once on nine power-play opportunities. They’ve been outscored, 29-9, in six games.

Mike Peca, whom the Sabres acquired in the off-season for Alexander Mogilny, scored a power-play goal, his second goal of the season, 2:20 into the game.

The Oilers cut the deficit when Zdeno Ciger scored his third goal on a power play.

Colorado 4, Washington 2--Martin Rucinsky and Adam Deadmarsh scored goals 58 seconds apart in the second period at Denver.

Washington trimmed Colorado’s lead to 2-1 when Pat Peake scored his fourth goal of the season 28 seconds into the second period.

Only 26 seconds later, Rucinsky, who held out during the preseason in a contract dispute, scored his first goal of the season on a pass from Peter Forsberg. Fifty-eight seconds after that, Deadmarsh scored his third goal of the year.

NHL Notes

The Dallas Stars put recently acquired forward Guy Carbonneau on the injured reserved list because of a groin injury and he is expected to be out three weeks. The Stars recalled Dan Kesa and Jamie Langenbrunner from the International Hockey League.
