ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL / PREP EXTRA : Pacifica Shuts Down Santiago, Takes Lead in League Standings
GARDEN GROVE — Pacifica dominated on both sides of the line of scrimmage to take over first place in the Garden Grove League with a 32-7 victory over Santiago Friday night at Bolsa Grande High.
The Mariners’ defense held Santiago to minus-five yards rushing and didn’t allow a first down until the 10-minute mark of the fourth quarter.
The only time Santiago (4-3, 2-1) crossed midfield was on a 69-yard pass from Ben Tran to Eric Bautista with two minutes left to play. The Cavaliers gained a total of 79 yards.
Running back Chase Hamm rushed for 135 yards in 15 carries, and scored Pacifica’s first touchdown on an eight-yard run, following a blocked punt by Rich Campos in the first quarter.
Pacifica (5-1-1, 3-0-1) added a 24-yard touchdown run by Lui Ala later in the first quarter. The Mariners then added their third touchdown on a three-yard run by Paul Toepel on the first play of the second quarter.
