ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL / PREP EXTRA : Boron’s Two Late Touchdowns Beat Capistrano Valley Christian
MISSION VIEJO — Robert Kostopoulos scored two touchdowns with less than five minutes remaining to lead Boron to a 25-14, come-from-behind victory over Capistrano Valley Christian in a nonleague game Friday night at Saddleback College.
The Bobcats, the defending CIF division XI champions, made defensive stands twice in the fourth quarter to key the comeback. After Capistrano Valley Christian quarterback Wayland Williams ran 42 yards on a bootleg to put the ball at the Boron 15, the Bobcats (4-3) held Capistrano Valley Christian to one yard on the next three plays and then watched Bryant Wolfsberger’s 31-yard field-goal attempt fall short.
Kostopoulos then led Boron on a 10-play, 80-yard drive he capped with a one-yard run. Boron faked the extra point as Chad York threw to a wide-open Ty Gifford for the two-point conversion to give the Bobcats an 18-14 lead with 4:43 left in the game.
The Eagles took the ensuing kickoff and, with the aid of a face mask penalty, started at their 45. After a clipping penalty moved the Eagles back to their 34, the Bobcats’ defense forced an incomplete pass, sacked Williams for a 10-yard loss and stuffed a screen pass for a 10-yard loss to force the turnover on downs.
Kostopoulos then sealed the victory when he ran 18 yards two plays later for the touchdown.
