Calabasas Doubles Up on Nordhoff
OJAI — Second-half touchdown passes by two different Calabasas High quarterbacks rallied the Coyotes to a 20-13 Frontier League victory Friday night over Nordhoff.
Calabasas trailed, 13-6, at halftime at Nordhoff High, but starting quarterback Scott Quigley threw a 17-yard scoring pass to Justin Cohen early in the third quarter.
Quigley suffered a knee injury later in the quarter, but reserve Zak Lovenson tossed an 11-yard scoring strike to Kevin Wang and the Coyotes (6-1, 2-0 in league play) defeated the Rangers (3-4, 0-1) for the first time in six years.
“At the beginning of the season [Quigley and Lovenson] were dead even, but Scott started because Zak is so valuable as a receiver,” Calabasas Coach Larry Edwards said.
Calabasas sophomore tailback Robbie Coppola rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown in 18 carries.
Nordhoff opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 23-yard run by Greg Coleman that capped an 80-yard, 10-play drive.
Calabasas answered in the second quarter with a 67-yard, 10-play drive with Coppola scoring on a one-yard run. The extra-point attempt was wide right.
Nordhoff took its halftime advantage after Calabasas turned the ball over on downs at the Nordhoff 34. The Rangers scored five plays later on a six-yard run by Russell Farrar (87 yards in 11 carries).
Calabasas took the second-half kickoff and drove 77 yards in 10 plays. Quigley threw to an uncovered Cohen in the corner of the end zone for the score.
