SOUTHERN SECTION ROUNDUP : MARMONTE LEAGUE
Simi Valley 10, Channel Islands 8--John Gonzalez kicked a 39-yard field goal with 14 seconds remaining to give the Pioneers (2-5, 1-3) a come-from-behind homecoming victory in a Marmonte League game at Simi Valley.
Gonzalez’ capped a two-play, 44-yard, 15-second drive and ruined the Raiders’ previous rally to take the lead. Charles Merricks (seven of 21, 76 yards) had given Channel Islands an 8-7 lead moments earlier when he tossed a 23-yard touchdown pass on fourth down to Steven Juarez with 32 seconds left.
The Pioneers took over on their 34 with 29 seconds remaining and Brad Norris fired a 42-yard pass to Chris Miller. Jason May (nine carries, 52 yards) gained two yards, paving the way for Gonzalez’ heroics.
