ORANGE : Schools to Start Expo to Foster Young Artists
Concerned about the dwindling resources available for artistic children, the Orange Unified School District’s trustees have agreed to establish an annual Exposition of the Arts.
Trustee Robert H. Viviano, who proposed the idea, said students from all grades would be able to enter their painting, sculpture, crafts, music and literature in the exposition.
“The gentility is going out of society,” Viviano said, “and we are becoming captive to television.”
Details such as judging, prizes and procedures will be worked out by a committee of teachers, parents and community members.
The district now offers art and music instruction from the middle-school level up but depends on PTA-sponsored programs for elementary students, said Neil McKinnon, assistant superintendent for educational services.
A detailed proposal is to be presented to trustees at their Nov. 21 meeting for approval.
