World IN BRIEF : VIETNAM : Remains of 11 MIAs Identified
The Pentagon released the names of 11 U.S. servicemen killed in the Vietnam War whose remains have been identified and will be returned home for burial. Among them was Air Force Col. Ivan D. Appleby of Fresno, who was aircraft commander on an F-4D photo reconnaissance mission over North Vietnam on Oct. 7, 1967, when the plane caught fire and slammed into a hillside after a missile detonated near the plane. The remains of the 11 men are to be returned from Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, to Travis Air Force Base, Calif., on Wednesday. The Pentagon said burial dates are to be determined in consultation with the families.
