Deion Sanders has been cleared by the NFL to play in Sunday’s game against the Falcons in Atlanta even though the league has ruled his contract invalid, Dallas Cowboy owner Jerry Jones said.

The NFL notified Jones by mail last Friday that Sanders’ seven-year, $35-million contract is $1.39 million over the salary cap and therefore invalid. But the league called Jones Tuesday to say that Sanders can suit up while it seeks confirmation in U.S. District Court that the contract circumvents the salary cap.

Jurisprudence

Joseph Maffia, a former accountant for Don King, testified before a federal jury in New York that the promoter told him to designate $350,000 of an advance paid to a boxer as training expenses.

In his second day of testimony, Maffia, testifying with immunity, told the jury he never saw a contract for a 1991 fight between Julio Cesar Chavez and Harold Brazier. The fight was canceled after Chavez cut his nose.

The cancellation triggered an attempt to collect on a Lloyd’s of London insurance policy.

Prosecutors say King doctored the front page of the Chavez-Brazier contract to include a phrase describing training expenses paid to Chavez as non-refundable, wording that would make them eligible for an insurance payout.

The parents of Kumasi Simmons, the Compton Centennial High football player who was ejected from a game at Beverly Hills and suspended from athletics for 18 months for hitting a football official, say they are filing an injunction to seek reinstatement of their son’s eligibility.

Smotrys has been unavailable for comment.
