Chatsworth’s MIAs Pin Forfeit on Tennis Team

Chatsworth High has forfeited Tuesday’s 4-3 Northwest Valley Conference tennis victory at Cleveland for competing with nine players instead of the required 10.

Coach Jim Araujo said two of six missing players from the 15-member team attended the funeral of a Chatsworth student who was killed in an automobile accident last weekend.

The other players missed the match because Chatsworth had no school Tuesday, Araujo said.

“The saddest thing is that those who showed up to play had to take the loss due to the decisions of others, and it may very well stop us from being in the playoffs,” Araujo said.

The City Section notified both schools this week that the match would be scored a 7-0 Cleveland victory. Cleveland’s record is now 4-9 overall, 2-9 in conference play. Chatsworth dropped to 4-7, 4-5.

Baseball

Left-handed pitcher Randy Wolf and three other players from the region have been invited to this weekend’s USA Baseball trials in Homestead, Fla. From a group of 66 college players, 40 will be invited to the Olympic tryouts in May.

Wolf, an El Camino Real High graduate and freshman All-American at Pepperdine last spring, played for Team USA last summer.

Also at the trials are Jim Parque, a left-hander from Crescenta Valley and UCLA; Keith Evans, a right-hander from Crespi and Cal; and Dan Cey, a shortstop from El Camino Real and Cal. Cey and Evans are juniors. Wolf and Parque are sophomores.

Sunrise Little League in Woodland Hills has scheduled registrations for today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Boys and girls ages 5 through 15 are eligible.

Chaminade High has hired Steve Riordan as varsity coach. Riordan coached previously at Granada Hills High.

Volleyball

The Valley Oaks Volleyball club has scheduled tryouts for Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. at Grant High. Boys and girls in grades 6 through 12 are eligible.
