Verbum Dei 14, Harvard-Westlake 7--The Wolverines failed to convert a fourth and one on the Eagles’ 15-yard line with 19 seconds to play at Verbum Dei.
Trailing, 7-6, with 1:29 to play, Verbum Dei (7-1, 2-0) scored the winning points on a 28-yard pass play from Tony Chism to Rejon Smith.
The Wolverines (2-6, 1-1) opened the scoring in the first quarter when Abed Abusaleh scored on a 15-yard run. The score capped a six-play, 32-yard drive that was set up by a fumble recovery by Odo Avizienis.
Abusaleh had 61 yards in 19 carries and Merlin DeMartinis added 41 yards in nine carries.
Altriea Brown led Verbum Dei rushers with 70 yards in 19 carries, but walked off the field midway through the fourth quarter after arguing with one of his linemen.
