Auto Repair Reform: An association of state attorneys general has recommended reforms to auto industry repair practices, including requiring detailed estimates before repairs are made.

Addressing a top concern of consumers nationwide, the National Assn. of Attorneys General task force also recommended requiring repair shops to itemize invoices after repairs are completed and called for the elimination of contests, bonuses and product-specific sales quotas that reward technicians based on quantity, rather than quality, of repairs. Other proposals include improving technician training and rewriting owner’s manuals.
